Martin Shake is the class philosopher/clown, the kid who can always be expected to do the unexpected. When he finally goes over the edge he finds himself committed to a teenage psychiatric hospital. His girlfriend Alice and their third wheel Elliot (Martin's best friend who has had a secret crush on Alice since the third grade) concoct a bizarrely ingenious plan to bust Martin out. Unfortunately, when they succeed, Alice and Elliot realize that they've made a big mistake, and the result could be fatal.

Sometime in the near future, Dr. Shelly Casar, a cutting-edge researcher, defies the government and the medical establishment with an illegal experiment in nanotechnology, the next step beyond cloning, which results in a molecular-level reproduction of herself. She names this "replisapien" Eve. Shelly attempts to keep Eve's existence a secret until she can complete her research, but circumstances force Shelly to go public. She encounters a backlash of public and institutional ignorance and fear so great that Eve barely escapes with her life. Beaten and branded, Eve runs away, trying unsuccessfully to disappear into the backroads of a cruel world. Shelly finds her double driven to turn against her, a tragically embittered, modern-day Frankenstein's monster.

In the not-too-distant future, a bleak underworld has arisen around a drug called Transenhance that triggers a prelinguistic human survival mechanism, allowing a user to "Send" thoughts into another's mind. Two convicted Trans abusers, Greta and Zane, meet at a Senders Anonymous meeting, and discover a means of combining their Sending through a sexually induced adrenaline surge, turning what would normally be a mere suggestive thought into a convincing hallucination. In other words, they can make a person see and believe whatever they choose. This leads them on a perverted and evil-spirited crime spree that grows to frightening proportions as they develop their power.

Meanwhile, Lyda Reyneta, a former CIA commando, has retired to domestic policing after having burned out while infiltrating and destroying one of the worlds most violent terrorist organizations. She, alone, begins to suspect that a string of dissimilar events, in which random people seem to be going crazy and turning violent, are somehow connected. As she narrows in on the truth, despite being ridiculed by her superiors because her theory is patently impossible according to the prevailing scientific knowledge.

Fighting personal and departmental bias as well as political pressure due to an upcoming international event that will draw hundreds of thousands of tourists to town, Lyda stumbles onto Lyda and Zane's billion dollar extortion scheme, destined to result in the deaths of thousands.

In her efforts to prevent the carnage, Lyda must battle an enemy who can literally get inside her mind and make her think and see whatever they want her to. The climactic battle is an emotional house of mirrors that sets expectations on edge.

Fifteen years after the Chinese takeover, 2012 Hong Kong is more chaotic than the Wild West ever was. In an attempt to stabilize the former colony's roller-coaster economy, Beijing offers to give Hong Kong a parcel of land for a "New Community" that essentially doubles the city's size. The development of this land amounts to a multi-billion dollar maguffin that draws ruthless and powerful players from all over the world and the underworld. Strange bedfellows abound as the bidders are finally reduced to two: one American, one Japanese.

Representing the Americans is Brian Paisley, who brings his beautiful wife Nora along to Hong Kong in a last ditch effort to save their failing marriage.

Meanwhile, the question of which of the two bids the Chinese will accept falls to a feng shui, an aged Chinese geomancer, whom Beijing has engaged as a public relations gimmick to determine which of the two bids the sprirts prefer. This old man, Chen, is the adoptive father of Alexander Jade, an emotionally haunted former Boston cop, who as a child was smuggled out of China after seeing his American missionary parents murdered by the Red Guard.

When Brian Paisley disappears under mysterious circumstances and Chen is framed and arrested for accepting a bribe from him, Jade is forced to team up with Nora to investigate in order to exonerate his "father." The result is a steamy, twisty tale of exotic adventure, murder, romance and high-stakes intrigue that takes us on a roller coaster ride from the mansions of Victoria Peak to the darkest human cesspools of The Walled City.
